According to Maric Gilbert (who knew him as 'Uncle Stan') he worked as a stoker on coastal vessels before building a log cabin for himself in the bush near the old gold mining settlement of Blackwood, which is situated in the Great Dividing Range east of Ballarat. Maric remembers visiting Noel Stanley as a boy during the 1930's, when he found him panning for gold and catching and skinning rabbits for their fur. He believes he had a daughter, although she might not have known her father. (jl)
